CASE HISTORY

DVL advisors worked closely with British Petroleum (BP) to provide the shipping and delivery of an accommodation module for the Mad Dog floating platform rig, a BP spar facility located in the Gulf of Mexico. Originating from the Pharmadule Emtunga's Arendal manufacturing yard in Gothenburg, Sweden the module required a total of circa 45 sets of axles on self-propelled modular transports platform-heavy haulers for transfer to the port for loading.

Module Size: 200 l x 70 h x 90 w feet / 61 x 21 x 27 m

Weight: 1,220 tonnes / 1,220,000 kg

Volume: 35,670 m2

The all-steel living quarters structure includes a helideck and was built to accommodate 130 engineers and personnel working around the clock on the floating rig. Ocean going barge towed by a ocean going tug was one of the options reviewed for the ocean transport. However, risk analysis determined a ship as best solution to avoid a broken tow line and the potential of complete loss of the unit and the barge, a set back that would cost millions with an additional three year set-back to build the replacement. Time was also a factor as North Atlantic crossing at year-end is the roughest time of the year.
